The robin’s nest is where this song really began.
Summer 2023. She made her home on top of a fake nest, surrounded by a craft-store frame I’d hung on the storage door of my balcony.
Just a small decoration that somehow became something… more.
July turned into October. The eggs never hatched. Mama never came back.
Something about that stuck with me; the idea of hope that never arrives, or a beginning that doesn’t get the chance.
It mirrored the season I was in: emotionally heavy, full of waiting, and somehow still moving forward. I’d just moved to Carson, jobless after a breakup with someone I’d shared five years of my life with.
If you know me, you know I’m drawn to deeper meaning. I notice things — like a cricket hopping into my car (literally), owls hooting at night, the way a hawk’s cry cuts through the air. Sometimes those moments feel like messages. Connection, warnings, maybe even closure… or a beginning.
Bad Omens was one of the very first songs I wrote on my songwriting journey. It’s been through a lot of transformation since then. I took it to Andrea Stolpe’s retreat in Sanger, CA (Oct. 2024), where I reshaped the structure but kept its emotional core intact. Andrea encouraged me to simplify without sanitizing… that helped me cut closer to the truth.
I went heavier on this one. I’ve always known it would be a rock song. It’s ingrained in my soul, it’s a part of who I am.
I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and honestly, I’m done trying to be!! 🫖
I write my own songs and music for growth, healing, and personal discovery. If you connect with it, that’s a bonus. I think most of us know what it’s like to grow through something that hurts on the way out. Writing it down and bending the rules of music theory a little — helped me make sense of it.
About a year later, I opened my balcony door… and there were baby birds in the nest.
Thanks for listening. Not just to the song, but to what’s underneath it.
